Beardsley is the oldest name in this brand's territory and the one with the most water in it. The original Beardsley was a siding on the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railroad, used for years as a sheep shearing point and as the junction for the branch toward McMicken. The name comes from William H. Beardsley, who joined his brother George's Agua Fria irrigation project in 1892 and spent four decades trying to finish it.
George Beardsley died in 1895, three years into the work, and William carried the project as general manager of the Agua Fria Construction Company. The company built the Dyer Diversion Dam — originally known as Beardsley Dam — and the canal that eventually took his name, moving water from what is now Lake Pleasant out across ranch ground as far as thirty-three miles away. What began as his scheme is now the Maricopa Water District.

Can I clear vegetation right up to the canal bank?
Not without checking first. Canal alignments carry maintenance easements and access roads, and the operating district has its own rules about what may be removed, planted, or driven on within the corridor. Cutting on your own side of the easement line is usually straightforward; assuming where that line runs is where people get into trouble.
