Fill work looks simple and is not. The material has to be right for the job, it has to arrive at a workable moisture, it has to be placed in controlled lifts, and it has to be compacted to a number somebody can test. Skipping any of those steps produces a surface that looks finished and settles later.

There are really three categories in play locally. Common fill is bulk material for raising grade and filling voids where nothing structural is going. Structural or select fill is specified material used under slabs, footings, and pavements. Aggregate base is the crushed product that goes directly under concrete or asphalt, and it is not interchangeable with the other two no matter what is cheaper that week.

Knowing which material the job actually needs

Specification comes from the design, not from the supplier. How much fill do I actually need?

It is a volume calculation from existing grade to design grade, plus an allowance for compaction — loose material shrinks meaningfully once it is properly compacted, often in the region of fifteen to twenty-five percent depending on the material. Ordering by eye is how sites end up with either three spare loads or a shortfall on the last lift.

Can dirt from elsewhere on my property be reused?

Often, and it is usually the cheapest material available. What disqualifies it is organic content, debris, or highly expansive clay. Material cut from a pad or a crossing on the same parcel is commonly fine as common fill after screening, and broken caliche can perform well as a base course. A quick lab check settles it.

What compaction number should I be asking for?

For anything structural, the engineer specifies it and a testing lab verifies it in the field — that is not a value to pick from a website. For non-structural work the useful principle is thin lifts, correct moisture, and a compactor sized to the material, which gets you far closer to a stable result than dumping and tracking ever will.

Why does the fill need to be watered before compaction?

Soil reaches its maximum density only within a fairly narrow moisture range. Too dry and the particles will not rearrange; too wet and they float. Desert stockpiles are always on the dry side of that window, so water is added deliberately and mixed in rather than sprayed on top, which is why you see trucks and a disc on a fill job.

Is screened fill worth the extra cost?

Where it goes under a slab, a driveway, or a footing, yes — the consistency is the point. For raising a low corner of a yard or backfilling a void, unscreened common fill is normally fine and considerably cheaper. Paying for screened material to fill a hole nobody will build on is money spent on tidiness.
